Compound

Engineered materials to customer’s needs

Our rubber-mixing plant was built with state of the art computerised, mixing and monitoring systems. These systems not only weigh and verify ingredients per batch but also control the mixing of each individual batch. As a result they prompt the operator to interact with the pre-programmed, computerised system to assure complete accuracy and reproducibility, with automatic reporting of every batch of rubber produced.

The approved raw materials are then staged for compounding. All the raw materials are weigh counted and acknowledged via our custom designed computerised software, created to maintain the strictest batch to batch traceability and reproducibility in the industry.

Services:

Our fully trained and qualified rubber technologists are able to offer a full range of services.

Avon’s Compound Development Team will develop a rubber compound to your specification and processes, or help you develop a specification to meet the end use requirements of the compound based on expected performance.

We can provide detailed advice to help you overcome any processing problems you may have, for example on such things as the best cure time and temperature or which is the most suitable mould release for a particular compound, as well as advice on tooling.

Another important service offered is unbiased advice on material selection. There are many similar materials manufactured and it is often difficult to get an unbiased recommendation from a polymer supplier. We will recommend the best polymer for the job, which offers the best value for money. Finally the technical department recognises that a fast response is often necessary when providing quotations for compound and in many instances they can supply the information within 24 hours.

Testing:

Once the compound has been developed and made, a specification can be established based around a set of physical test criteria which are important to the end use application. For example, an aerospace seal made from Silicone (VMQ) would need to have the following important physical properties: good compression set, excellent low temperature properties, fuel resistance and good tear strength.
