The Technology:
When water is pressurised to 60,000 psi (4000 bar) or more and passed at high velocity through a tiny opening, it can cut a variety of soft materials such as paper, gasket materials, rubber and foam. But when small amounts of abrasive particles are mixed into the jet stream, the resulting “abrasive waterjet” can cut virtually any hard material such as metal, composites, wood, stone and glass.
The process is essentially the same as water erosion found in nature, but accelerated and concentrated by the orders of magnitude. Today’s waterjet cutting machines are computer controlled, enabling the use of CAD/CAM technology.

Advantages over Traditional Cutting Methods:
- Cut a wide variety of profiles and materials with just one tool
- No direct contact between the cutting head and the material, minimising any distortion
- 100% perpendicular cut edges irrespective of material thickness
- Virtually no induced tension or micro cracking
- No heat affected zones to work harden, melt or distort cut edges
- No mechanical stresses as caused by other cutting methods
- Superior edge quality
- Reduced scrap
- Greater material utilisation

Avon Group Waterjet Cutting Capabilities:
By investing in some of the most advanced waterjet cutting machines available, we can ensure repeatable cut quality time after time. Dimensional tolerances to ± 0.1 mm can be maintained, with maximised material utilisation.
The use of advanced software programmes allows combined machine control and CAD/CAM technology. Standard drawing formats (dxf, iges etc.) can be seamlessly imported or created with the built in CAD functionality. This coupled with trained machine operators, minimises job changeover times, enhancing productivity and machine utilisation.
Avon Group ultra high pressure and abrasive waterjet cutting machines utilises some of the most advanced technology available. Ultra high pressure intensifier pump systems, pressurises the water before forcing it through a nozzle as small as 0.1 mm in diameter, generating a high velocity water jet with a speed of up to 1000mm/sec.
To cut harder materials, technology has been developed that allows a measured dose of abrasive material into the waterjet, increasing the cutting performance. This abrasive jet can cut through virtually any material with improved edge quality.
The cutting head units used, redefine the metrics of peak performance, by allowing the fastest possible cutting speed with the lowest possible operating cost. All cutting head units are designed and manufactured within exceptionally tight tolerances, resulting in highly precise alignment of components and produces the most defined and concentric waterjet stream available. This allows more cutting power to be directed at the work piece with less deflection onto the cutting head, allowing faster, more efficient cutting, and extended cutting head life.
